A memorable day trip - Dongqian Lake, China

Dongqian Lake, China

I have visited China many times over the years, both for business and fun. It’s my favourite country to visit - fascinating history, delicious food, friendly people, incredible scenery, lively cities and quiet ancient villages. There really is something for everyone!

Last summer I spent part of the summer school break with Chinese friends, and together we spent a wonderful day visiting picturesque Dongqian Lake (Zhejiang Province, China). Its only 35km from Ningbo City, where my friends reside, and as its by the water there was a gentle breeze and the temperature was a little cooler. Summertime temperatures reach well over 30 degrees most days in this region, so a day outside of the city was a welcome relief.

After a 45 minute drive, we reached the lakeside edge, where there is a huge area of lotus plants, really lush and pretty. Unfortunately it wasn’t blooming season, but there were a few pink buds and still lovely to view. There are walkways, shady areas and pavillions to escape from the heat and still enjoy the freshwater lake and mountain views.

But the highlight was the lakeside cafe, with the best cakes I have ever eaten in China. The cakes were served on delicate ceramic plates, with small silver cake forks - just like a high tea in a luxury hotel. They also served us coffee, which was good quality and tasted nice, however served in takeaway paper cups (no need to photograph those with the cakes)! The lake view was also amazing, and we spent a couple of hours relaxing in the comfy seating while waiting for our afternoon in the nearby hot springs. We finished the long day by eating traditional snacks in the nearby Hanling Old Street.

All in all, a perfect day trip!
