Daytrip or weekend getaway - Kiama NSW, Australia

March 2026 - Sydney to Kiama

As we have family spread all over Queensland and NSW, we decided to all meet at Kiama for a weekend. It was convenient for those of us flying to Sydney, as you can connect with the trainline right at the airport. We were blessed with amazing weather - still hot enough to swim and enjoy the great outdoors, and we avoided the busy Easter season. We stayed in cabins overlooking the rock pools and a short walk to Diggies Cafe Kiama.

A short hop from Sydney - 120km (nearly 2 hours driving or just over 2 hours by train). A beautiful coastal town that has everything you could possibly want for a quick getaway!

Kiama is famous for its blowhole and natural beauty. The coastline is stunning, with clear blue waters, gigantic Norfolk Pine trees and an 11km coastal walking track that hugs the coast. There is also a historic steam train (picnic train) that operates occasionally, which happened to be operating on the weekend we were in town. I’m keen to return and book the high tea on the steam train!

The town is small and easy to walk, and offers a large variety of restaurants, clubs, cafes, shops - and even a patisserie (which I may or may not have visited every day)! I didn’t have a car, and didn’t need one. Everything I wanted was nearby, just a short stroll.

We ranged in ages from 17 to 84, and everyone enjoyed this location. The rockpools were especially popular as a safe and comfortable way to enjoy swimming in the ocean.

I’m pretty sure we all rated Kiama 10/10 for a weekend getaway.
